UFCW Local 555 Endorses Nicholas Kristof for Governor

Tigard, Oregon – United Food and Commercial Workers Local 555, which represents over 29,000 essential workers, has voted to enthusiastically endorse Nicholas Kristof for Governor of the State of Oregon.

“We have heard from a number of other candidates in this contest,” said UFCW 555 President Dan Clay, “But frankly our Board felt, as I do, that it’s foolish to support the politicians who praised essential workers during the pandemic while neglecting necessary worker protections. We need leadership that is willing to actually deliver solutions when they get to Salem, instead of trying to get in their sound bites.”

“In the past several years, UFCW 555 has worked on getting better worker compensation protections during COVID, strengthening enforcement capabilities, and pushing for vaccine prioritization for essential workers (to name a few). Salem has given lots of promises, but delivered little for those who kept and are still keeping our society going,” explained UFCW 555 Secretary-Treasurer Sandy Humphrey.

“While we appreciate the sentiments expressed by all the candidates who applied for the endorsement, we can no longer wait and see if this time those sentiments are translated into action,” said Clay. “When we met with Nick Kristof, he not only articulated a bold vision, but also outlined his plans to make it a reality. That’s what we’re looking for. In recent years, lifelong politicians in Oregon have shown little interest in taking bold action for working families.”
